Zen Hospice is a beautifully restored Victorian home in the heart of San Francisco. People enter the home as the last stop before dying. On Saturdays I work in the kitchen cooking custom order meals up to 6 residents. Meals are tailored to dietary restrictions and personal preferences. Above are sample set of the types of meals I serve to patients.
At times I am in charge of scheduling, groceries or planning larger meals for the holidays. A majority of the time is spent managing the food logistics and an equally important component is providing an open space for patients and loved ones to confront death and dying. The kitchen is a vital space for family and friends to take a break from the bedside. I find myself offering emotional and physical support for grieving loved ones.
